The Thomas Merton Society Reading Group - join us - all are welcome!

The first session of the online Thomas Merton Society Reading Group was on 16 June 2022.

We come together on the third Thursday evening of alternate months for about 1 hour.

Over the past 12 months we have shared our thoughts on the following writings by Thomas Merton:

  • Merton’s letters of 1967 & 1968 to Suzanne Butorovich, a sixteen year-old high-school student

  • ‘Then & Now: Thomas Merton and Cambridge’ by Susanne Jennings

  • ‘Christian Culture needs Oriental Wisdom’ in The Thomas Merton Reader

  • ‘The Root of War is Fear’, chapter 16 of New Seeds of Contemplation.

  • ‘Humility against despair’, chapter 25 of New Seeds of Contemplation.

  • ‘The General Dance’, chapter 39 of New Seeds of Contemplation

We will all come together again for our next Zoom meeting on Thursday 15 January, 2026 at 7pm GMT when we will be looking at 3 letters by Merton to his Muslim correspondent Abdul Aziz.

Those who sign up are provided with digital copies of the texts for discussion, on the basis that they are for study and personal use only.
