TMS Reading Group Information

The Thomas Merton Society Reading Group - join us - all are welcome!

The first session of the online Thomas Merton Society Reading Group was on 16 June 2022.

We come together on the third Thursday evening of alternate months for about 1 hour.

Over the past 12 months we have shared our thoughts on the following writings by Thomas Merton:

• ‘Christian Culture needs Oriental Wisdom’ in The Thomas Merton Reader

• ‘The Root of War is Fear’, chapter 16 of New Seeds of Contemplation.

• ‘Humility against despair’, chapter 25 of New Seeds of Contemplation.

• ‘The General Dance’, chapter 39 of New Seeds of Contemplation

• 3 letters by Merton to his Muslim correspondent Abdul Aziz.

• 3 letters by Merton to John Harris, a schoolmaster from Totnes in Devon.

We will all come together again for our next Zoom meeting on Thursday 21 May, 2026 at 7pm BST when we will be looking at the last 2 journal entries in the diary, ‘Woods, Shore, Desert’ that Merton kept in May 1968. The text can be found in Volume 7 of Merton’s journals, The Other Side of the Mountain.

Those who sign up are provided with digital copies of the texts for discussion, on the basis that they are for study and personal use only.
